Christening, Baptism Advice for Godparents
Your godchild’s parents have greatly honored you by selecting you to
be a godparent. Congratulations! Your ritual responsibilities may
include holding the infant during the ceremony, praying over her, or
making promises about her religious upbringing. Following the
christening, you will help the parents foster the child’s spiritual
development through adulthood.
Traditionally, godparents were responsible for selecting and
purchasing the godchild’s christening attire as well as a special
dress or outfit for post-ceremony festivities. Today, their role may
be somewhat smaller: they may help the parent select the christening
apparel and accessories, offer to purchase the christening wear, or
simply content themselves with showering the child with presents
after the ceremony. Talk with the child’s parents if you are
uncertain of what is expected of you. |
