What You Want for First Communion: A Giveaway

Believe it or not, it’s time for us to begin working on next year’s First Communion dress and veil styles. I am curious to know what you would like to see, what you’ve been unable to find, what you want to see more of, less of, how long, which fabric, you get the idea.

Let’s make this fun, shall we? I’ll select a random commenter on this post to receive one of our gorgeous sterling silver cross charm bracelets. (Be sure to leave an email address at which you can be reached.) All comments through 9 pm (Pacific Time) on Tuesday, March 24th will be entered. I look forward to hearing from you…and your friends…and their friends!

A Modest Perspective

When I was a little girl, I distinctly remember my mother saying something along these lines in an overheard conversation: “If I dress my girls modestly when they’re young, perhaps they’ll feel uncomfortable in revealing clothing when they’re older.” By and large, she was right!

I don’t intend to argue about the issue of modesty (or lack thereof) in our society, but I’d like to think some of you would agree with me when I say that many clothing styles for young ladies today are certainly pushing them to dress much older than they are, and to bare a lot more than is necessary.

To me, special occasion dressing is just as important as (if not more important than) daily dressing…especially in a religious (First Communion, LDS Baptism) context: Do you really want your daughter to make deeply meaningful covenants with Deity in spaghetti straps? It’s true that what is in her heart is more important than what she wears, but it makes sense to me that what she wears is an outward sign of respect and devotion.

To that end, most of the First Communion dress styles you’ll find at One Small Child are all-over modest. You may see a bare arm here or there to accomodate customers looking for sleeveless styles, but you’ll never see a spaghetti strap or fully strapless gown in our boutique. It’s something we believe in.

Your Communion Dresses: Alicia

Steven sent this gorgeous photo of his daughter in her first communion dress last year, he comments:

“I just wanted to send a picture of our daughter in her Miss Destiny dress and veil. One Small Child was truly spectacular in providing a beautiful quality design. Your company was amazing in getting the dress and halo to us in a short period of time. Our daughter felt wonderfully special during the event and at her communion dinner.

Communion Dresses for Hard to Fit Sizes

Does your child wear the most common size of 7, 8, or 10 in First Communion dresses? Great! You’ll have no problem locating an appropriate gown for her. If she’s smaller or larger than the average however, finding the perfect dress can be a bit of a challenge.

To accomodate those of you who may be in need of a less common size, we offer several styles beginning at size 5 (sometimes even smaller) and running up to size 16, as well as some styles offered in sizes 8+ to 16+. You can view all styles offered in plus sizes here.

To see which sizes are available when viewing the order page for each style, simply click the drop down arrow on the size selection field to view the sizes offered. Detailed size charts are available for each style featured. Questions? Drop us a line!

Crosses for Christening and Communion

For members of christian faiths that reverence the sign of the cross, the selection of a First Communion dress, christening gown, christening outfit or christening accessory adorned with the cross can be a meaningful expression of devotion.  We at One Small Child are pleased to offer many options for including this symbology in your special event:

-Several of our christening gown and Communion dress styles feature crosses embroidered on skirts, woven into lace trims, or hand beaded all over.

-Cross embroidery options are available on our simple cotton slip, bodysuits, bibs, blankets, and baptism towels.

-Socks embellished with embroidered crosses are available in styles for infant boys and girls, as well as older girls.

-Miniature bibles displaying crosses in gold tone or white lace are available in both Catholic and Protestant editions for your convenience.
