My family gathered this past weekend to celebrate the blessing of a precious, long-awaited baby. It was fabulous to be together, to feel the spirit of the occasion, to laugh and reminisce and play. These are truly days we remember.
Interestingly enough, we talked about that–the remembering component of celebration. My ever-thoughtful sister pointed out that ancient civilizations instituted celebrations to mark significant religious, political and cultural events (think the Children of Israel and the Passover, etc.). They knew this was the way to instill in themselves and their children the importance of what happened.
Today it is the same: celebrations are our way of reminding ourselves and teaching our children about what is truly important to us, about things we want to internalize and remember for life. I hadn’t thought of it exactly that way before, but truly, the things I remember most clearly in my life are linked to celebrations, which in turn speak about the beliefs and values by which I live.

It is a traditional gown…and it is silk! But there’s more: a matching visor hat ornate with a braid trim and a cotton (and comfy) slip beneath the gown!
Silk gowns are popular for the appealing ritzy fabric. As pictured here, many of our heirloom christening gowns feature an ‘heirloom-style open back’, meaning the back edges of the skirt are hemmed and buttons are placed part-way down the skirt to allow for flexibility in how you want the gown to be worn.
At times, it can be tricky to hold on to that darling baby amidst an abundance of christening finery…especially when some of those layers are slippery! The open back makes it possible to get a better grip on your baby, without bunching up the gown. It also allows you to drape the skirt more graciously in portraiture. And there you have it: open backs are, in this case, very convenient things!

We lost someone special this week. She will be sorely missed. We are grateful to have known and worked with this truly lovely, funny, talented, young mother of four. We’ll be out of the office on Friday, November 21st, as we gather with her friends and loved ones to say goodbye.
